How to Make Dairy-Free Pesto

There is nothing quite like the taste of fresh basil pesto. It seems everyone loves the flavour it adds to soups, vegetables, chicken or fish. If you have a family member that doesn't like vegetables, try steaming broccoli or carrots and then topping it with pesto. You will convert them into a veggie lover for sure!
2 cups       fresh basil
1/2 cup      pine nuts or  hemp hearts
1/2 cup      olive oil
3-4 tbsp     lemon juice
3 cloves     garlic
½ to 1 tsp  pink rock or grey sea salt

1. Put all ingredients in a food processor.
2. Blend on high until desired paste consistency is reached.
3. Store in airtight glass jar in fridge or freezer.

My basil plants are now covered in flowers, should I use these in making pesto?
Thanks Steve

Hi Steve,

Yes you can! It is better to remove the flowers so that the plant can continue to bush out.

Cheers, Julie

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, you're a real person. I was planning to make pesto tonight and what did I find in my email today, your recipe—perfect timing, and I went out over my lunch break and got some hemp hearts. Thanks for all you do.
