Maca Power Smoothie

Maca Power Smoothie

This recipe is great way to start your day or

as a post workout snack!

Maca

If your adrenals had a dream food, it would be maca. This cruciferous root not only has adaptogenic properties (which means it helps the body cope with stress by supporting adrenal health), but is also a brain tonic that helps decrease the release of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). Maca is also a reproductive tonic, meaning it protects against stress-induced imbalances in sex hormones.

Hemp Hearts

These Hemp Hearts pack a powerful punch of protein, omegas and fiber. Not only are Hemp Hearts easy to incorporate into any meal, they taste delicious too! Did you know Dr. Oz even refers to Hemp Hearts as ‘Brain Food’?

Ashwagandha

The benefits of ashwagandha extend far beyond mood. In India it is also used to help older patients with memory. It is also known for its ability to fight off cold and cough symptoms and boost thyroid function. Further research looks to determine its effectiveness for cancer, diabetes, bipolar disorder, constipation, impotency and arthritis.

In a blender puree:

1/4 cup (60 mL)     organic blueberries

1/4 cup (60 mL)     organic strawberries

1/2                           avocado

1                              large kale leaf (chopped)

1/2 tsp (2.5 mL)     cinnamon

4 tbsp (60 mL)       hemp hearts

1 tsp (5 mL)           maca powder

1 tsp (5 mL)           ashwagandha powder

1 tbsp (15 mL)      honey or maple syrup

1/2 cup (125 mL)  water

Enjoy!

If I wanted to make this, but didn't have Ashwagandha powder, is there a substitute?

Good Morning Cindy,

The Ashwaganda is optional but if you have any Ginseng that will work in a similar fashion.

Cheers, Julie

What kind of Maca would you recommend for this smoothie? Raw or gelatinized?
Thanks! Lisa

Hi Lisa,

You can use either but the gelatinized has been shown to be more bio available as the carbohydrate has been broken down.

Cheers, Julie
