Help with PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

alt

PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of menstrual irregularity and affects 5-10% of reproductive age women. You may have experienced chronic anovulation (lack of ovulation, as evidenced by irregular periods); Clinical (acne, excess hair, oily skin, thickened skin, balding) or biochemical signs of hyperandrogenism (elevated levels of male hormones, or androgens). Your doctor may have also found many cysts on your ovaries during an ultrasound.

EstroSense (www.pno.ca) can help balance hormones, which are key to reducing the symptoms of PCOS. Taking the eight nutrients found in EstroSense will help you keep hormone levels healthy and detoxify and eliminate carcinogenic estrogens.  Taking 4-6 capsules a day provides the same cancer protecting plant nutrients as eating 1 kilo of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and kale.

The key ingredients that detoxify the liver include curcumin, the yellow pigment of turmeric. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that is helpful with PCOS.

Estrosense also contains milk thistle that enhances detoxification by increasing glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant created by your cells to fight destructive free radicals.

The Estrosense label states: "Used in herbal medicine to promote a healthy liver", but then underneath it cautions about liver disease or liver trouble. EstroSense is designed to help detoxify the liver, so this reminder has only been added for consumers who do already have a liver problem(s) that they need to consult their MD, NP or Health Care Practitioner before beginning to take EstroSense.

If you have clearance to try an herbal remedy, I like Estrosense because it is gentle yet very effective.

I would also considering taking Vitex (ChasteBerry). This is a well-known herb that has been used for centuries for hormonal imbalances in women. It is also one of the most important herbs for PCOS because it helps stimulate and stabilize the function of the pituitary gland which controls the release of LH (luteinizing hormone). The ability of chaste tree berry to raise progesterone levels in the body is an indirect effect, so the herb itself is not a hormone.

Along with these herbal suggestions, A HEALTHY DIET IS ESSENTIAL!

1) Eat low Glycemic Index (GI) carbohydrates such as vegetables and high fibre seeds. It is very important for women with PCOS to completely avoid refined carbohydrates including sugar, white flour, whole-wheat flour and products made from them (i.e.- pasta, breads, desserts, pop, and candy).

2) Keep your blood sugar stable by eating every three to five hours and include protein and good fats (for example some nuts/nut butter, seeds/seed butter, hardboiled egg, hummus dip) at each meal.

3) Eat 7-10 servings a day of vegetables including 3 leafy greens every day. Your vitality will shine!

Hi Julie,

Thanks for this article.
I have a question - I have seen two gynecologists, as well as a number of MDs and they all keep pushing birth control on me, but I refuse to be on it. I have heard that while BC can induce menstruation, it does not cause ovulation - which is the cause of the follicle formation on my ovaries... I have not had my period since August 2011 and it is now June 2012. Although I have no problem not having my period ;), I have noticed that I don't feel very much like a woman...I also know this isn't good for my bones...Should I take your suggestion and try vitex? Will it cause weight gain? (I am one not over weight to begin with, but would not like to gain weight). Thanks so much

Hello Sophie,

For a situation as complex as yours I would recommend seeing a Naturopathic Doctor to see if it is appropriate for you to use vitex.

Kind regards, Julie

hi julie,

when you say "avoid refined carbohydrates including sugar", you mean white sugar, right? If I eat (in moderation) pure maple syrup, raw honey, fruit (fresh and dried), that doesn't count as the bad sugar, right?

Hello Jillian,

Even using sweeteners such as honey, maple syrup, fruit, etc. can spike your blood sugar. Be sure to use all of these in moderation and couple them with healthy fats (such as hemp seeds or coconut) and/or protein to keep your blood sugar balanced.

Cheers, Julie

My daughter-in-law is wanting to get pregnant and is very upset that she has been diagnosed with PCOS. Her doctor has put her on birth control pills and is wanting to put her on Metformin, claiming it will help her regulate her hormones/periods. She is reluctant but has agreed to the BC. Should I encourage her to see a naturopathic doctor? Is there something that can be done to help her? Can you give me the name of one that specializes in this syndrome.
Thank you

Hello Gigis,

I would encourage her to seek the advice of a Naturopathic or Holistic Medical Doctor. They have been trained in the contra-indications of medications.

Wishing you and your daughter in-law well.

Cheers, Julie
